Programmer - Education and Careers
Expand your horizons – start a
career as a Computer Programmer Computer programmers write,
test, and maintain the detailed instructions, called programs or
software that computers utilize to perform requested functions. They also conceive, design, and test logical structures for solving
problems using computer technology. Many technical innovations in
programming - advanced computing technologies and sophisticated
new languages and programming tools have redefined the role of a
programmer and elevated much of the programming work done today.
As a result the need for highly skilled computer programmers has
never been greater.
Programmers often are grouped into two broad
based categories: applications programmers and systems
programmers. Applications programmers usually focus on business,
engineering, or science functions. They write software to handle a specific application, such as a program to track inventory, within an
organization. They may also revise existing packaged software.
Systems programmers maintain and control computer systems
software, such as operating systems, networked systems and
database systems. They modify and maintain code that determines how the network, workstations, and central processing unit handles
information and communicates with peripheral devices, such as
terminals, printers, and disk drives.
A bachelor’s degree
is a prerequisite for many computer programming jobs. Some programming positions may require only a 2-year degree. Relevant work
experience also is very important. For more advanced positions,
majors in Information Technology, Information Systems or graduate
degrees are preferred.
There are numerous technical institutions
that provide specialized training for computer programmers. Many
of these schools partner with software vendors and offer diplomas
and certifications for graduates in specific
programming languages and techniques. The Microsoft Certified
Application Developer (MCAD) is an example of an industry
standard certification.
Advance your career and turn your dreams
into reality as information technology professional. Your future
starts today as a Computer Programmer.
